Transporting Plants to Brazil
A Phytosanitary Certificate that has been legalized by a Brazilian Consulate is required for the transport of plants to Brazil. The traveler is advised to check whether the airline has additional requirements.
1) Specifications about the Phytosanitary Certificate
a) Phytosanitary Certificate with the official stamp of the USDA must attest that in the 40 days prior to the departure date there has been no infection or contagion in the plant’s vicinity,
b) The Certificate must be legalized by the Brazilian Consulate within seven (7) days of its issuance.
2) Consular Fees
US$ 20.00 per document.
3) Method of Payment
The Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago ONLY accepts payments in the form of a Money Order issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS), payable to the “Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago.” Personal checks, credit cards, or any other forms of payment are not accepted.
4) Processing time
Documents presented in person are legalized on the same day.
II- REQUESTS BY MAIL
1) Send the following documents to the Consulate:
a) Required documentation;
b) Money Order;
c) Self-addressed, postage paid USPS return envelope (the Consulate recommends USPS Express Mail).
2) Carriers
The Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago ONLY accepts mail correspondence via United State Postal Service (USPS).Envelopes transported by other carriers will be returned without opening. For the most secure and rapid delivery, the Consulate strongly suggests the use of USPS Express Mail.
3) Processing time
Two (2) working days after receiving the complete documentation. This period does not include the time in the mail. The processing time may increase in times considered high season
IMPORTANT:
· The individual is advised to take note of the tracking numbers of both the submit AND the return envelopes.
· Incomplete or incorrect documents will be sent back in the return envelope provided without being legalized.
· The Consulate will not be held responsible for delays or losses of documents or Money Orders sent or returned by mail.
· In case of loss, the individual should seek assistance from the U.S. Postal Service.
