Other Consular Services


  • Military Service and other duties necessary for Brazil’s national security are required of all Brazilians by law. Women and ordained clergy are exempt in times of peace.   
  • Brazilian males residing abroad must register for the draft in the first semester of the calendar year in which they will turn eighteen (18) at the Consulate that has jurisdiction over their place of residence. The Consulate can register men between 18 and 45 years of age.
  • Between the ages of 18 and 31, Brazilian males must annually request postponement of their draft from the Consulate in person or by mail. 
  • Upon reaching 31 years of age, they can request a Certificate of Exemption from the Draft (“Certificado de Dispensa de Incorporação”).
  • Brazilian males living abroad returning definitively to Brazil must report to the military authorities within 30 days of entering the country to regularize their military standing.

Military Draft Registration
 
 
Brazilian males residing abroad must register for the draft in the first semester of the calendar year in which they will turn eighteen (18) at the Consulate that has jurisdiction over their place of residence.

To enlist, one must appear personally at the Consulate General in Chicago with the following documents:
 
1) Military Draft Application Form (“Ficha de Alistamento Militar”)
Duly completed, dated, and signed. Click HERE for Military Draft Application Form.
 
2) Three (3) recent photos
Passport size (2x2 in.) or 3x4cm (1x1.5 in.), in color or black and white, full-face only, on a white or clear background. Instant, digital, scanned or photocopied photos are not acceptable.
 
3) Official Brazilian ID
Original, with a photocopy of the following documents:
a.       Brazilian Birth Certificate or Certificate of Birth Registration;
b.      Brazilian ID card or pages 1, 2, and 3 of Brazilian Passport.
 
4) Processing Time
Military Draft Registration is a same-day service.
 
5) Consular Fee
This service is provided free of charge.
 
 
IMPORTANT: Between the ages of 18 and 31, Brazilian males must annually request Postponement of the Draft from the Consulate in person or by mail.

Postponement of the Draft
 
 
All Brazilians residing abroad who are registered for the military draft must annually request postponement of their draft from the nearest Brazilian Consulate in person or by mail until they reach 45 years of age.
 
Upon reaching 31 years of age, Brazilians can request a Certificate of Exemption from the Draft (“Certificado de Dispensa de Incorporação”). Once this is granted, one is no longer required to annually request postponement of their draft.
 
The department within the Consulate General in Chicago responsible for Postponement of the Draft and Exemption from the Draft is Legalization.
 
 
POSTPONEMENT OF THE DRAFT
 
One can request postponement of their draft by presenting the following documents either in person or by mail:
a.       Original Military Draft Certificate (“Certificado de Alistamento Militar”- CAM)
b.      Self-addressed, pre-paid USPS return envelope (if requesting postponement by mail) so that the CAM can be returned once their postponement has been noted.
 
If requested in person, the postponement is registered immediately. The processing time by mail is two (2) business days after the required documents have been received. This processing time may increase in periods considered high season.
 
 


CERTIFICATE OF EXEMPTION FROM THE DRAFT
 
One can request a certificate of exemption from the draft by presenting the following documents either in person or by mail:
a.       Exemption from the Draft Request Form (“Formulário de Pedido de Dispensa de Incorporação,” duly completed, dated, and signed. If sent by mail, signature must be notarized by a notary public. Click HERE for Exemption from the Draft Request Form.
b.      Two (2) passport size (2x2 in.) or 3x4cm (1x1.5 in.) photographs;
c.       Plain copy of the front and back of the Military Draft Certificate (“Certificado de Alistamento Militar”- CAM)
d.      Plain copy of Birth Certificate

Send complete documentation (AND pre-stamped and self-addressed USPS return envelope) to:

PLEASE NOTE: The Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago ONLY accepts mail correspondence via United State Postal Service (USPS).Envelopes transported by other carriers will be returned without opening. For the most secure and rapid delivery, the Consulate strongly suggests the use of USPS Express Mail.
 
PROCESSING TIME
·         The Consulate General in Chicago will send the request and required documents to the Brazilian Ministry of Defense.
·         It may take several months from the Ministry of Defense to process the request for Exemption from the Draft.
·         Once the Exemption from the Draft has been conceded, the individual must report to the Consulate General in Chicago to sign confirmation that they have received the Certificate of Exemption.
 
IMPORTANT
·         The applicant is advised to take note of the tracking numbers of both the submit AND the return envelopes.
·         Incomplete or incorrect documents will be sent back in the return envelope provided without being processed.
·         The Consulate will not be held responsible for delays or losses of documents sent or returned by mail.
·         In case of loss, the applicant should seek assistance from the U.S. Postal Service.
