Legalization of Other Documents
ATTENTION: According to the Brazilian Decree # 6,946, of August 21, 2009, it is no longer necessary to legalize the International Health Certificate for Pets, issued by local veterinarian and certified by the US Department of Agriculture, before travelling to Brazil.
The department within the Consulate-General in Chicago responsible for Legalization of Documents is Legalization.
1) DOCUMENTS ACCEPTED FOR LEGALIZATION
Common documents:
Original document:
a) FIRST legalized by a Notary Public;
b) THEN authenticated by the County Clerk or Secretary of State, according to the system of each State.
The certification by the County Clerk or the Secretary of State must be annexed to the original document. Sending a copy of the Notary Public's license is not required.
Official documents, such as:
a) Those issued by county offices;
b) Those issued by the state (Secretary of State, Judge of the Superior Court, City Hall, etc.);
c) Certificates of birth, marriage and death, and divorce sentence.
Certified copies are accepted, provided that they are signed and bear an official rubber stamp or haut-relief stamp.
Non-criminal Record:
a) No more than 90 days old.
b) Issued by the police department on the person's place of residence.
c) Printed on letterhead paper. Printouts of computer-generated criminal records are not accepted.
d) The document must have an official signature as well as a stamped or haut-relief seal of the Police Department.
2) CONSULAR FEES
a) US$ 20.00 for each notary signature legalized
b) US$10.00 for each additional legalized copy.
Method of payment
The Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago ONLY accepts payments in the form of a Money Order issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS), payable to the “Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago.” Personal checks, credit cards, or any other forms of payment are not accepted.
3) PROCESSING TIME
a) The documents will be legalized on the same day if presented personally.
b) See below for processing time for legalization by mail.
4) LEGALIZATION BY MAIL
Send complete documentation (document(s) to be legalized, USPS Money Order; Pre-stamped and self-addressed USPS return envelope) to:

PLEASE NOTE: The Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago ONLY accepts mail correspondence via United State Postal Service (USPS).Envelopes transported by other carriers will be returned without opening. For the most secure and rapid delivery, the Consulate strongly suggests the use of USPS Express Mail.
PROCESSING TIME (for documents sent by mail)
· Two (2) working days after receiving the complete documentation. This period does not include the time in the mail.
· The processing time may increase in times considered high season.
IMPORTANT
· The individual is advised to take note of the tracking numbers of both the submit AND the return envelopes.
· Incomplete or incorrect documents will be sent back in the return envelope provided without being legalized.
· The Consulate will not be held responsible for delays or losses of documents or Money Orders sent or returned by mail.
· In case of loss, the individual should seek assistance from the U.S. Postal Service.
