SUBSEQUENT MEASURES TO BE TAKEN IN BRAZIL
In order to definitely obtain Brazilian citizenship, one must bring the Certificate of Birth Registration (“Certidão de Registro de Nascimento”) issued by the Brazilian Consulate to the Registry Office of the First Office of the Civil Registry (“Cartório do Primeiro Ofício do Registro Civil”) of either the individual’s hometown OR of the Federal District, which has jurisdiction over the entire national territory.

BIRTH REGISTRATION IN BRAZIL
Parents wishing to register their child’s birth directly in Brazil, without the intermediary of a Consulate, must ascertain the requirements of the Brazilian Registry Office (“cartório”) where they would like to register the birth.

PLEASE NOTE: In most cases, in order to be legally valid in Brazil, documents, including the child’s Certified Copy of Birth Certificate, must be legalized by a Brazilian Consulate and subsequently translated into Portuguese by a certified public translator in Brazil. Click here for information about how to legalize documents.
