Reacquisition of Brazilian Citizenship
 
 
The following information is from the web site of the Brazilian Ministry of Justice (in Portuguese):
 
According to Article 12, II of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, an individual who has lost his/her Brazilian citizenship can reacquire Brazilian citizenship if he/she resides in Brazil.
 
The ex-national is not required to hold a permanent visa in order to apply for reacquisition of citizenship but must provide proof of residence in Brazil, e.g. a residential lease or real estate tax bill or receipt.
 
The request can be presented either to the Ministry of Justice or to a regional department of the Federal Police in Brazil.
 
 
The following documentation is required to present the request:
·         Duly completed and signed request form. Click HERE for request form;
·         Proof of residence in Brazil, e.g. a residential lease or real estate tax bill or receipt, utility bill;
·         Legalized copy of permanent resident card or equivalent document to prove residence in Brazil, when applicable;
·         Legalized copy of all pages of passport;
·         Legalized copy of Birth Certificate.
 
NOTE: Documents originating in a foreign country must be legalized by a Consular Authority in order to be considered legally valid in Brazil. Click HERE for information about legalization of documents at the Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago.
 
The required documentation can be presented directly to the Federal Police or sent via registered mail or SEDEX to:
