I-Requirements for a tourist visa:
1) Passport
a) US citizens: Original (no copies), signed by the applicant, with a minimum remaining validity of six months left and with at least two contiguous blank pages left.
b) Non US citizens must present proof of legal residency, such as a photocopy of green card or of a valid visa in the United States, or an American Re-entry Permit.
c) Visas will be issued on a "laissez-passer" to nationals of the following countries: Bhutan, Central African Republic, Taiwan.
2) Receipt ("Protocolo"), signed by the applicant. To obtain the receipt, the applicant must:
Notice: ALL fields must be filled out, not only those indicated with an asterisk. Incomplete forms will be returned;
b) Print and sign the receipt.
Notice: In case of visa application for minors under 18, the receipt must be signed by one parent or legal representative. For more information, read "Minors under 18 years of age", below;
3) One photograph
Passport size, in color or black and white, full-face only, on a white or clear background. Instant, digital, photocopies or scanned photos are not acceptable.
4) Round-trip-ticket
Applicants must present one of the items below:
a) a copy of the round-trip-ticket, e-ticket or e-booking;
b) a signed letter from the airline or travel agent, on their letterhead, with the itinerary, name(s) of the passenger(s), flight number or cruise information, and dates of arrival and departure from Brazil.
Notice: Airline employees and their dependents must present a copy of their airline I.D. card, and a letter from the airline, on its letterhead, with the itinerary.
5) Letter by Sponsor/Invitation letter
As applicable (i.e., for participation in athletic or performing arts event or competition, scholar conferences ), copy of letter by sponsors or invitation letter with detailed information on the event and conditions of attendance;
Notice: the documents listed above are not all-inclusive. The Consulate General may request further documents at its discretion.
6) Consular Fees
To calculate the total visa fee, one must add up:
a) Tourist visa fee: it changes according to the applicant's nationality.
b) Reciprocity fee: citizens from certain countries (the U.S. included) must pay and additional non-refundable reciprocity fee.
c) Processing fee: unless the visa application is submitted personally by either the applicant or by a member of his family (father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, husband or wife), a non-refundable processing fee applies.

II-Method of payment
The Consulate General in Chicago ONLY accepts payments with Money Order issued by the U.S. Postal Service payable to “Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago”.
Multiple applications submitted together may be covered by one single money order for the total sum. When submitted by mail, multiple applications may be covered by one single money order if they are sent in the same U.S.P.S. envelope.
III-Processing time
Usually, four (4) working days if applied in person and fourteen (14) days if submitted via mail, after all requirements are met.
The processing time does not include:
a) the time an application is held by a visa service or a travel agency;
b) the time the applicant takes to provide additional information/documents eventually required by the Consulate;
c) the time in the mail.
During high season and in the case of group visas, longer processing time periods may apply.
Notice:
a) Letter of consent authorizing the Consulate General to issue a visa, signed by both parents or the legal guardian. The signatures must be certified by a public notary.
b) Certified copy of the minor's birth certificate;
c) Parent's or legal guardian's ID (original or certified copy);
d) Legal guardians must present proof of guardianship.
