I-Requirements for a tourist visa
1) Passport
a) US citizens: Original (no copies), signed by the applicant, with a minimum remaining validity of six months left and with at least two contiguous blank pages left.
b) Non US citizens must present proof of legal residency, such as a photocopy of green card or of a valid visa in the United States, or an American Re-entry Permit.
c) Visas will be issued on a "laissez-passer" to nationals of the following countries: Bhutan, Central African Republic, Taiwan.
2) Receipt ("Protocolo"), signed by the applicant. To obtain the receipt, the applicant must:
Notice: ALL fields must be filled out, not only those indicated with an asterisk. Incomplete forms will be returned;
b) Print and sign the receipt.
Notice: In case of visa application for minors under 18, the receipt must be signed by one parent or legal representative. For more information, read "Minors under 18 years of age", below;
3) One photograph
Passport size, in color or black and white, full-face only, on a white or clear background. Instant, digital, photocopies or scanned photos are not acceptable.
4) Round-trip-ticket or reservation
Applicants must present one of the items below:
a) a copy of the round-trip-ticket, e-ticket or e-booking;
b) a signed letter from the airline or travel agent, on their letterhead, with the itinerary, name(s) of the passenger(s), flight number or cruise information, and dates of arrival and departure from Brazil.
NOTE: Airline employees and their dependents must present a copy of their airline I.D. card, and a letter from the airline, on its letterhead, with the itinerary.
5) Non-criminal record
For all applicants 16 years of age or older, issued not more than 90 days in advance by the Police Department of the applicant’s place of residence.
6) Additional Requeriment
For scientists, researches, professors or member of cultural or scientific mission who is not going to be paid from Brazilian source:
a) Ministry of Science and Technology decree authorizing the scientific activity;
b) Invitation letter or other document from the Brazilian cultural or educational organization detailing the purpose of the trip;
c) Financial Support.
Proof of sufficient funds or declaration from the organization financially responsible for the visitor’s stay in Brazil;
For scientists, researchers, professors or professional for paid participation in conference or congress, for a period no longer than 30 days.
a) Invitation letter or other document from the Brazilian cultural or educational organization explaining the purpose of the trip and declaring to be financially responsible for the visitor’s stay in Brazil;
For cultural or study trip
a) Invitation letter or other document from the Brazilian cultural or educational organization explaining the purpose of the trip;
b) Financial Support.
c) Proof of sufficient funds in U.S. or declaration from the Brazilian organization that it will be financially responsible for the visitor’s stay in Brazil.
For exchange students under an educational exchange program
a) About the exchange program:
• constitution Act;
• registration at CNPJ;
b) About the student:
• Confirmation of acceptance in the exchange program;
• Certification of course enrollment;
• Names, qualification and full address of the responsibles for the applicant in Brazil.
c) Financial Support.
Proof of sufficient funds in the U.S. or declaration from the exchange program organization that it will be financially responsible for the visitor's stay in Brazil.
7) Consular Fee
To calculate the total visa fee, one must add up:
a) Visa fee: it changes according to the applicant's nationality.
b) Reciprocity fee: citizens from certain countries (the U.S. included) must pay and additional non-refundable reciprocity fee.
c) Processing fee: unless the visa application is submitted personally by either the applicant or by a member of his family (father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, husband or wife), a non-refundable processing fee applies.

II-Method of payment
The Consulate General in Chicago only accepts payments with Money Order issued by the U.S. Postal Service payable to “Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago”.

The Consulate General does not accept personal checks, credit cards, or any other form of payment.
III-Processing time
Usually, 8 working days if applied in person and 14 days if submitted via mail, after all requirements are met. Note that this period does not include:
a) the time an application is held by a visa service or a travel agency;
b) the time the applicant takes to provide additional information/documents eventually required by the Consulate;
c) the time in the mail.
During high season and in the case of group visas, longer processing time periods may apply.
PLEASE NOTE
► Minors under 18 years of age:
• A copy of the minor’s birth certificate is required in all cases;
• Minors not traveling with both parents/guardians must provide a notarized letter of consent signed by the non-accompanying parent(s)/guardian(s) authorizing the Consulate to issue a visa;
► A International Certificate of Vaccination may be needed.
