Other Consular Services


  • Scientists, professors, researchers, participants in cultural, technological or scientific missions (services provided must not be paid for by a corporation or other legal entity based in Brazil, except for wages for services rendered, with the submission of a receipt);
  • Scientists, technicians, researchers or volunteers under the umbrella of an international cooperation program;
  • Interns and other unpaid trainees, bearers of scholarships receiving professional practice in Brazil;
  • Exchange students;
  • Technicians receiving training in the operation and maintenance of machinery or equipment produced in Brazil;
  • Amateur athletes, under 21 year old, participating in training programs in Brazil;
  • Provision of services to a religious or social assistance entity, without employment relationship with a corporation or other legal entity based in Brazil.
Temporary Visa I holders are not allowed to engage in any paid activity in Brazil.


I-Requirements

1) Passport
Original (no copies), signed by the applicant, with a minimum remaining validity of six months left and with at least two contiguous blank pages left.
► Non US citizens must also present proof of legal residency, such as a photocopy of green card or of a valid visa in the United States, or an American Re-entry Permit.
► Visas will be issued on a "laissez-passer" to individuals of: Bhutan, Central African Republic and Taiwan. Please, click here to see the requirements for Laissez-passer.
 
2) Receipt ("Protocolo")
a) APPLICATION FORM: Click here to fill out the visa-request form (please disregard the message about the website's security certificate. See the image after these instructions);
ALL fields must be filled out, not only those indicated with an asterisk. Incomplete forms will be returned; The information provided by the applicant is used for issuing the VISA: Be very carefull when filling out the visa application form.
b) Print and sign the receipt. 
Notice: In case of visa application for minors under 18, please read "Minors under 18 years of age", below;
 
3) One photograph
Passport size, in color or black and white, full-face only, on a white or clear background. Instant, digital, photocopies or scanned photos are not acceptable. Please, attach the photo on the first square of the "Receipt".
 

4) Round-trip-ticket
Applicants must present one of the items below:
a) a copy of the round-trip-ticket, e-ticket or e-booking;
b) a signed letter from the airline or travel agent, on their letterhead, with the itinerary, name(s) of the passenger(s), flight number or cruise information, and dates of arrival and departure from Brazil.
 
Notice: Airline employees and their dependents must present a copy of their airline I.D. card, and a letter from the airline, on its letterhead, with the itinerary.

5) Non-criminal record (Students, Volunteers and Trainees)  
For all applicants 16 years of age or older, issued not more than 90 days in advance by the Police Department of the applicant’s place of residence.


6) Additional Requeriment  

For scientists, researches, professors or member of cultural or scientific mission who is not going to be paid from Brazilian source:
a) Ministry of Science and Technology decree authorizing the scientific activity;
b) Invitation letter or other document from the Brazilian cultural or educational  organization detailing the purpose of the trip;
c) Financial Support.
Proof of sufficient funds or declaration from the organization financially responsible for the visitor’s stay in Brazil;
 
►For scientists, researchers, professors or professional for paid participation in conference or congress, for a period no longer than 30 days.
Invitation letter or other document from the Brazilian cultural or educational organization explaining the purpose of the trip and declaring to be financially responsible for the visitor’s stay in Brazil;
 
►For cultural or study trip
a) Invitation letter or other document from the Brazilian cultural or educational organization explaining the purpose of the trip;
b) Financial Support:
Proof of sufficient funds in U.S. or declaration from the Brazilian organization that it will be financially responsible for the visitor’s stay in Brazil.
 
►For exchange students under an educational exchange program
a) About the exchange program:
       • constitution Act;
       • registration at CNPJ;
b) About the student:
       • Confirmation of acceptance in the exchange program;
       • Certification of course enrollment;
       • Names, qualification and full address of the responsibles for the applicant in Brazil.
c) Financial Support.
Proof of sufficient funds in the U.S. or declaration from the exchange program organization that it will be financially responsible for the visitor's stay in Brazil.

II-Method of payment
     
The Consulate General in Chicago ONLY accepts payments with Money Order issued by the U.S. Postal Service payable to “Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago”.

Multiple applications submitted together may be covered by one single money order for the total sum. When submitted by mail, multiple applications may be covered by one single money order only if they are sent in the same U.S.P.S. envelope.


 III-Processing time

Usually, seven (7) working days, after all requirements are met.
The processing time does not include:
a) the time an application is held by a visa service or a travel agency;
b) the time the applicant takes to provide additional information/documents eventually required by the Consulate;
c) the time in the mail.

PLEASE NOTE

► Minors under 18 years of age: 
• A copy of the minor’s birth certificate is required in all cases;
• Minors not traveling with both parents/guardians must provide a notarized letter of consent signed by the non-accompanying parent(s)/guardian(s) authorizing the Consulate to issue a visa;
