Temporary Visa I (VITEM-I)

I- Application Requirements
 
1) Passport
Original (no copies), signed by the applicant, with a minimum remaining validity of six months and with at least two contiguous blank pages left.
 
► Non-US citizens must also present proof of legal residency, such as a photocopy of either a green card, a valid visa issued by the United States government, or an American Re-entry Permit.
 
► Please note the additional requirements for visa applications for minors under 18 years of age listed after Application Requirements.
 
2) DELIVERY RECEIPT ("Protocolo") printed upon completion of ONLINE VISA REQUEST FORM
 
a)       Complete the ONLINE VISA REQUEST FORM by clicking HERE. Click on “VISA REQUEST” on bottom left-hand side of screen and follow instructions.
·         Please disregard the message about the website's security certificate. (See the image after these instructions.) 
·         ALL fields must be filled out, not only those indicated with an asterisk. Incomplete forms will be returned.
·         The information provided by the applicant will be used for issuing the VISA (e.g. spelling of name, address, date of birth).Be very careful to accurately complete the visa request form.
 
b) Print and sign the DELIVERY RECEIPT (“Protocolo”) by visiting the same web site and clicking “PRINT VISA FORM DELIVERY RECEIPT” on bottom left-hand side of screen.
 
3) One photograph
·         Passport size, in color or black and white, full-face only, on a white or clear background.
·         Instant, digital, scanned or photocopied photos are not acceptable.
·         Please attach the photo on the first square of the Delivery Receipt (“Protocolo”).
 
4) Round-trip-ticket
Applicants must present one of the following items:
·         A copy of the round-trip-ticket, e-ticket or e-booking.
·         A signed letter from the airline or travel agent, on their letterhead, with the itinerary, name(s) of the passenger(s), flight number or cruise information, and dates of arrival and departure from Brazil.
 
5) Proof of residence in consular jurisdiction
A photocopy of a valid driver's license or utility bill will be accepted as proof of residence.

7) International Certificate of Vaccination 
Applicants who have visited certain countries and territories (view list here) within 90 days prior to applying for a visa/entering Brazil are recommended to present a Yellow Fever International Certificate of Vaccination upon entering Brazil.
 
8.) Non-criminal record (for students, volunteers and trainees only) for all applicants 16 years of age or older. No more than 90 days old, issued by the Police Department of the applicant’s place of residence. The document must have an official signature as well as a stamped or haut-relief seal of the Police Department. Printouts of computer-generated criminal records are not accepted.
 
9.) Proof of health insurance policy that is valid for the Brazilian territory.
 
10.) Additional Requirements  
For scientists, researchers, professors, or members of a cultural or scientific mission who WILL NOT be paid by a Brazilian entity:
a)       Ministry of Science and Technology decree authorizing the scientific activity;
b)      Original invitation letter or other document from the Brazilian cultural or educational organization detailing the purpose of the trip;
c)       Proof of sufficient funds in U.S. or original declaration from the Brazilian organization that it will be financially responsible for expenses incurred by the applicant during his/her stay in Brazil.
 
►For scientists, researchers, professors, or professionals who WILL receive payment for participation in conference or other event, for a period no longer than 30 days:
 
Original Invitation letter or other document from the Brazilian cultural or educational organization explaining the purpose of the trip and declaring itself to be financially responsible for expenses incurred by the applicant during his/her stay in Brazil.
 
PLEASE NOTE: These applicants are NOT required to present proof of health insurance with their visa application.
 
►For students, trainees and participants in cultural/ study trips:
a)       Original invitation letter or other document from the Brazilian cultural or educational organization explaining the purpose of the trip;
b)       Proof of sufficient funds in U.S. or original declaration from the Brazilian organization that it will be financially responsible for expenses incurred by the applicant during his/her stay in Brazil.
c)       A original signed letter from the American academic institution or educational exchange program on official letterhead detailing the purpose of the applicant’s activities in Brazil and including whether activities are part of the applicant’s curricular program.
 
►For volunteers:
 
PLEASE NOTE:
·         Volunteers applying for the VITEM-I must not present their passport, roundtrip ticket, and payment of the Consular Fees until AFTER the visa request has been approved.
·         For each of the following required documents, an official or notarized document AND a photocopy of the same document must be included in the visa application.
·         Each of the following documents required from the entity in Brazil must be notarized at the Brazilian civil registry (“cartório.”)
·         Documentation provided by an entity in the United States must be notarized by a notary public and legalized by the Consulate-General of Brazil. 
·         Documentation from a third country must be legalized by the Brazilian Consulate-General or Embassy that has jurisdiction over the third country.
 
Documentation from the entity based in Brazil:
a)       Invitation letter from the entity based in Brazil, confirming the applicant’s petition to work as a volunteer and providing information about the activities that will be performed by the volunteer and where the work will take place.
b)       Letter from the entity based in Brazil, stating the entity’s full financial responsibility for the applicant during his/her stay in Brazil and for the applicant’s departure from Brazil after the conclusion of intended activities, as well as for all medical and hospital expenses incurred by the applicant and, if applicable, by the applicant’s dependents. Letter must be notarized at Brazilian civil registry (“cartório”).
c)       Constitutive document (“ato constitutivo”) or social statutes (“estatu social”) of the entity that has been registered at the civil registry (“cartório”), as proof that the entity is officially registered in Brazil.
d)       Constitutive minutes (“atas de reunião”) that have been registered at the civil registry (“cartório”), as proof that the entity is still functioning.
e)       Empowerment act of the entity’s directory (“ato de nomeação, designação ou eleição da atual diretoria”) that has been registered with the Brazilian civil registry (“cartório”).
f)        Legal proof of the entity’s registration with the National, State, Federal or Municipal representative Council on Social Assistance (“Conselho de Assistência Social- seja nacional, estadual, do Distrito Federal ou municipal”).
 
Documentation from the applicant’s country of residence or origin:   
Proof of the applicant’s professional experience and/or academic qualifications corresponding to the nature of the activities he/she is to perform in Brazil (e.g. diploma or letter from previous employer).
 
 
PLEASE NOTE: The documents listed above are not all-inclusive. The Consulate-General may request further documents at its discretion.
 
 
IMPORTANT
 
Visa applications for minors under 18 years of age must include:
 
a) Authorization for Brazilian Visa Issuance for Minors”  document, signed by both parents or legal guardians. Both signatures must be certified by a notary public if the visa application is submitted by mail or through a third party. If the visa application is submitted personally by one parent or legal guardian, the signature of the other parent or legal guardian must be certified by a notary public;
b) Certified copy of the minor's birth certificate;
c) Photo ID of both parents or legal guardians (original or notarized copy);
d) Legal guardians must present official proof of guardianship.
 

II- Method of payment
 
The Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago ONLY accepts payments in the form of a Money Order issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS), payable to the “Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago.” Personal checks, credit cards, or any other forms of payment are not accepted.
  
Multiple applications submitted together may be covered by one single money order for the total sum. When submitted by mail, multiple applications may be covered by one single money order only if they are sent in the same USPS envelope.

IV-Processing time and checking the status of your visa application
 
PROCESSING TIME - Be sure to plan your visa application in advance. After all application requirements are met, the processing time is approximately:
     Four (4) working days, if applied in person;
     Nine (9) working days, if applied by mail; and
     Ten (10) working days, if applied through a travel or visa agency.
 These estimated processing times do not include:
     The time an application is held by a travel or visa agency;
     The time the applicant takes to provide additional information/documents subsequently required by the Consulate;
     The time in the mail.
 
VISA STATUS - Applicants can check the status of their visa application here (Click “CHECK VISA”). When your application status is listed as “No Application Pending,” your visa application has been processed.
·         Individuals who have applied for a visa in person or through a third party: Please allow three (3) working days after the delivery of your application for it to appear in the system. Your visa will be ready for pick-up on the date specified on the Delivery Receipt (“Protocolo”) issued the day of your application.
 
·         Individuals who have applied for a visa by mail: Please use the tracking number on your USPS envelope to see when the Consulate has received your visa application. Allow 3 working days after that day for your application to appear in the system. Then, use the tracking number on the USPS return envelope included in your application to see when your passport and visa have been mailed to you. 
 
PLEASE NOTE: The processing time may increase for group visas and other special cases, and in times considered high season.
