Transfer of Residence Following Retirement
PERMANENT VISA GRANTED TO RETIRED INDIVIDUALS
I – Eligibility and Guidelines
- Retired people able to transfer US$ 2,000.00 or more per month to Brazil in pension funds.
- The applicant's permanent visa may be extended to two dependents (spouse or child. For more information, see Permanent Visa for Family Reunion).
- Applicants who intend to bring more than two dependents to Brazil must present proof of being able to transfer a minimum amount of US$ 1,000.00 to Brazil per extra dependent per month.
- The Permanent Visa application must be submitted in person.
II – Documentation required for first stage of Permanent Visa application
IMPORTANT: Please present ORIGINALS of the following required documents. All of the following required documents will need to be legalized by the Consulate before the visa application can be processed. The applicant will need to make ONE COPY of each legalized document before the Consulate can proceed to process the visa.
1) Passport
Original (no copies), signed by the applicant, with a minimum remaining validity of six months and with at least two contiguous blank pages left.
- Non-US citizens must also present proof of legal residency, such as a photocopy of either a green card, a valid visa issued by the United States government, or an American Re-entry Permit.
- Please note the additional requirements for visa applications for minors under 18 years of age listed after Application Requirements.
2) DELIVERY RECEIPT ("Protocolo") printed upon completion of ONLINE VISA REQUEST FORM
a) Complete the ONLINE VISA REQUEST FORM by clicking HERE. Click on “VISA REQUEST” on bottom left-hand side of screen and follow instructions.
· Please disregard the message about the website's security certificate. (See the image after these instructions.)
· ALL fields must be filled out, not only those indicated with an asterisk. Incomplete forms will be returned.
· The information provided by the applicant will be used for issuing the VISA (e.g. spelling of name, address, date of birth).Be very careful to accurately complete the visa request form.
b) Print and sign the DELIVERY RECEIPT (“Protocolo”) by visiting the same web site and clicking “PRINT VISA FORM DELIVERY RECEIPT” on bottom left-hand side of screen.
3) One photograph
· Passport size, in color or black and white, full-face only, on a white or clear background.
· Instant, digital, scanned or photocopied photos are not acceptable.
· Please attach the photo on the first square of the Delivery Receipt (“Protocolo”).
4) Proof of residence in consular jurisdiction
A photocopy of a valid driver's license or utility bill will be accepted as proof of residence.
5) Non-criminal record for applicant and dependants 16 years of age or older. No more than 90 days old, issued by the Police Department of the applicant’s place of residence. The document must have an official signature as well as a stamped or haut-relief seal of the Police Department. Printouts of computer-generated criminal records are not accepted.
6) Marriage certificate or birth certificate as necessary, for each dependent.
7) Statement from the pension provider
The document must state the monthly amount paid to the applicant. As applicable, the document must indicate the lifetime portion amount and the temporary portion amount of the benefit.
8) Bank statement
Duly signed by an authorized bank clerk, confirming that a monthly pension of US$ 2,000.00 or more as necessary can be transferred to Brazil.
9) Proof of full retirement
A Social Security Statement must inform the full retirement age and the monthly pension income. As applicable, the document must indicate the lifetime portion amount and the temporary portion amount.
10) International Certificate of Vaccination
III- Documents to be presented by applicant after the Consulate-General has received authorization from the proper authorities in Brazil
1) Passport
Original (no copies), signed by the applicant, with a minimum remaining validity of six months and with at least two contiguous blank pages left.
► Non-US citizens must also present proof of legal residency, such as a photocopy of either a green card, a valid visa issued by the United States government, or an American Re-entry Permit.
2) Consular Fee
PLEASE NOTE: Documents not written in Portuguese, Spanish or English (except for travel documents): must be translated to the Portuguese language by a sworn translator before they are presented to the Consulate. Sworn translators must sign the translation and have their signature first notarized by a notary public and then certified by the County Clerk or Secretary of State (depending on the State).
PLEASE NOTE: The documents listed above are not all-inclusive. The Consulate-General may request further documents at its discretion.
IMPORTANT
Visa applications for minors under 18 years of age must include:
a) “Authorization for Brazilian Visa Issuance for Minors” document, signed by both parents or legal guardians. Both signatures must be certified by a notary public if the visa application is submitted by mail or through a third party. If the visa application is submitted personally by one parent or legal guardian, the signature of the other parent or legal guardian must be certified by a notary public;
b) Certified copy of the minor's birth certificate;
c) Photo ID of both parents or legal guardians (original or notarized copy);
d) Legal guardians must present official proof of guardianship.
IV- Method of payment
The Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago ONLY accepts payments in the form of a Money Order issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS), payable to “Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago.” Personal checks, credit cards, or any other forms of payment are not accepted.

VI-Processing time and checking the status of your visa application
PROCESSING TIME - After the applicant has submitted the completed visa application, the application must be sent to Brazil for approval. After the proper Brazilian authorities have authorized the Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago to issue the Permanent Visa and the applicant has presented their original passport and the consular fee, the processing time is approximately four (4) working days.
VISA STATUS - Applicants can check the status of their visa application here (Click “CHECK VISA”). Please allow three (3) working days after the delivery of your application for it to appear in the system. When your application status is listed as “No Application Pending,” your visa application has been processed.Your visa will be ready for pick-up on the date specified on the Delivery Receipt (“Protocolo”) issued the day of your application.
