Family Reunion
PERMANENT VISA GRANTED ON THE BASIS OF FAMILY REUNION FOR DEPENDENTS OF BRAZILIAN NATIONALS OR OF FOREIGNERS WHO HOLD A PERMANENT VISA ("RN 36/99")
I-Eligibility and Guidelines
►Foreigners married to Brazilian nationals and foreigners who hold a Brazilian permanent visa.
►Parents of a foreigner married to a Brazilian national, or of a foreigner who holds a Brazilian permanent visa, if duly demonstrated that the petitioner (i.e. the Brazilian citizen or the foreigner who holds a Brazilian permanent visa) is financially responsible for them.
►Single sons/daughters of a foreigner married to a Brazilian national, or of a foreigner who holds a Brazilian permanent visa. These sons/daughters must be under 21 years of age. Age limitation does not apply to dependents over 21 years of age who are not capable of financially sustaining themselves.
►Siblings, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren of a foreigner married to a Brazilian national, or of a foreigner who holds a Brazilian permanent visa. These dependants must be orphan, single, and under 21 years of age. Age limitation does not apply to dependents over 21 years of age who are not capable of financially sustaining themselves.
Notice: The 21 years of age limit (see above) can be extended for dependents until the year they reach 24 years of age, if they are enrolled in an under-graduate or graduate course, provided there is reciprocity of treatment for Brazilian nationals.
►The Permanent Visa application must be submitted in person.
II-Application Requirements
1) Passport
Original (no copies), signed by the applicant, with a minimum remaining validity of six months and with at least two contiguous blank pages left.
► Non-US citizens must also present proof of legal residency, such as a photocopy of either a green card, a valid visa issued by the United States government, or an American Re-entry Permit.
► Please note the additional requirements for visa applications for minors under 18 years of age listed after Application Requirements.
2) DELIVERY RECEIPT ("Protocolo") printed upon completion of ONLINE VISA REQUEST FORM
a) Complete the ONLINE VISA REQUEST FORM by clicking HERE. Click on “VISA REQUEST” on bottom left-hand side of screen and follow instructions.
· Please disregard the message about the website's security certificate. (See the image after these instructions.)
· ALL fields must be filled out, not only those indicated with an asterisk. Incomplete forms will be returned.
· The information provided by the applicant will be used for issuing the VISA (e.g. spelling of name, address, date of birth).Be very careful to accurately complete the visa request form.
b) Print and sign the DELIVERY RECEIPT (“Protocolo”) by visiting the same web site and clicking “PRINT VISA FORM DELIVERY RECEIPT” on bottom left-hand side of screen.
3) One photograph
· Passport size, in color or black and white, full-face only, on a white or clear background.
· Instant, digital, scanned or photocopied photos are not acceptable.
· Please attach the photo on the first square of the Delivery Receipt (“Protocolo”).
4) Proof of residence in consular jurisdiction
A photocopy of a valid driver's license or utility bill will be accepted as proof of residence.
5) Non-criminal record for applicant and dependants 16 years of age or older. No more than 90 days old, issued by the Police Department of the applicant’s place of residence. The document must have an official signature as well as a stamped or haut-relief seal of the Police Department. Printouts of computer-generated criminal records are not accepted.

7) DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FROM THE PETITIONER (BRAZILIAN CITIZEN OR FOREIGNER HOLDING A BRAZILIAN PERMANENT VISA):
· "Carteira de Identidade" or "Carteira de Registro Nacional de Estrangeiro - RNE" issued in Brazil.
· "Compromisso de Manutenção" Form, duly filled out and signed by the petitioner. To download the form please click here: FORM.
8) DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FROM THE FOREIGN VISA APPLICANT:
· Foreign spouse of a Brazilian national- Brazilian marriage certificate (to legalize a non-Brazilian marriage certificate, click here).
· Dependents of a foreigner who holds a "Carteira de Registro Nacional de Estrangeiro - RNE" - Marriage certificate or birth certificate as proof of relationship AND, for children over 21 years of age, proof of inability to be financially independent.
9) Consular Fee
PLEASE NOTE: Documents not written in Portuguese, Spanish or English (except for travel documents): must be translated to the Portuguese language by a sworn translator before they are presented to the Consulate. Sworn translators must sign the translation and have their signature first notarized by a notary public and then certified by the County Clerk or Secretary of State (depending on the State).
PLEASE NOTE: The documents listed above are not all-inclusive. The Consulate-General may request further documents at its discretion.
IMPORTANT
Visa applications for minors under 18 years of age must include:
a) “Authorization for Brazilian Visa Issuance for Minors” document, signed by both parents or legal guardians. Both signatures must be certified by a notary public if the visa application is submitted by mail or through a third party. If the visa application is submitted personally by one parent or legal guardian, the signature of the other parent or legal guardian must be certified by a notary public;
b) Certified copy of the minor's birth certificate;
c) Photo ID of both parents or legal guardians (original or notarized copy);
d) Legal guardians must present official proof of guardianship.
III-Method of payment
The Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago ONLY accepts payments in the form of a Money Order issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS), payable to “Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago.” Personal checks, credit cards, or any other forms of payment are not accepted.

V-Processing time and checking the status of your visa application
PROCESSING TIME - Be sure to plan your visa application in advance. After all application requirements are met, the processing time is approximately three (3) working days.
►For couples who have been married for less than five years: Once the visa applicant has presented all of the required documentation, the application must be sent to Brazil for approval. The estimated processing time applies only once the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally authorized the Consulate-General to issue the visa.
VISA STATUS - Applicants can check the status of their visa application here (Click “CHECK VISA”). Please allow three (3) working days after the delivery of your application for it to appear in the system. When your application status is listed as “No Application Pending,” your visa application has been processed.Your visa will be ready for pick-up on the date specified on the Delivery Receipt (“Protocolo”) issued the day of your application.
PLEASE NOTE: The processing time may increase without notice in times considered high season.
