A laissez-passer is a travel document that the Consulate will issue to individuals holding a passport issued by a Government not recognized by the Brazilian Government.
Visas will be issued on a laissez-passer to individuals from the Central African Republic and Taiwan.

 
 
I- How to obtain a laissez-passer
 
1) In order to obtain a laissez-passer travel document, do the following when completing the online visa request form:
1.)     When you reach the SCEDV website, click on VISA.
2.)     Once you have reached the third tab titled “DOCUMENTS,” choose the “LAISSEZ-PASSER” option on the drop-down menu for “TYPE.”
 
2) Include proof of legal residency in the United States with completed visa application.
A photocopy of either a green card, a valid visa issued by the United States government, or an American Re-entry Permit will be accepted as proof of legal residency.
 
3) Include Consular Fee of US$ 80.00 per laissez-passer in addition to the fee of the visa you are applying for.
           
 

II- Method of payment
 
The Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago ONLY accepts payments in the form of a Money Order issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS), payable to “Consulate-General of Brazil in Chicago.” Personal checks, credit cards, or any other forms of payment are not accepted.
 
 
 

 III- How to submit your completed laissez-passer and visa application

IV-Processing time for laissez-passer and visa application
 
PROCESSING TIME - The processing time for a laissez-passer is the same as the processing time for the visa that is being applied for.
After all application requirements are met, the processing time is approximately:
  • Seven (7) working days, if applied in person;
  • Nine (9) working days, if applied by mail; and
  • Ten (10) working days, if applied through a travel or visa agency.
 These estimated processing times do not include:
  • The time an application is held by a travel or visa agency;
  • The time the applicant takes to provide additional information/documents subsequently required by the Consulate;
  • The time in the mail.
 
VISA STATUS - Applicants can check the status of their visa application here (Click “CHECK VISA”). When your application status is listed as “No Application Pending,” your visa application has been processed.
  • Individuals who have applied for a visa in person or through a third party: Your visa will be ready for pick-up on the date specified on the Receipt Slip (“Protocolo”) issued the day of your application.
  • Individuals who have applied for a visa by mail: Please use the tracking number on your USPS envelope to see when the Consulate has received your visa application. Then, use the tracking number on the USPS return envelope included in your application to see when your passport and visa have been mailed to you. 
 
PLEASE NOTE: The processing time may increase for group visas and other special cases, and in times considered high season.
