General Information about Vitem V
• With the sole exception of short-term technical assistance in cases of emergency, the Brazilian interested party must submit application for Vitem V directly to the Ministry of Labor.
• The Consulate General will only issue the visa after being informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the Ministry of Labor had authorized the visa.
• The visa for transference of technology or for provision of technical assistance can be issued by the Brazilian Consulate, without previous consent from the Ministry of Labor, in one the following two cases of emergency:
► imminent risk to life, to the environment or to the assets of the company in Brazil;
► interruption of the production or services of the company in Brazil.
• In either situation, both the Brazilian and US company/institution must submit to the Consulate General, for consideration, letters, in their letterheads, explaining the nature of the emergency.
• The emergency visa is valid for multiple entries, for a stay of up to 30 days only. It can be issued to the same person once every 3 months only.
I-Requirements for a tourist visa
1) Passport
a) US citizens: Original (no copies), signed by the applicant, with a minimum remaining validity of six months left and with at least two contiguous blank pages left.
b) Non US citizens must present proof of legal residency, such as a photocopy of green card or of a valid visa in the United States, or an American Re-entry Permit.
c) Visas will be issued on a "laissez-passer" to nationals of the following countries: Bhutan, Central African Republic, Taiwan.
2) Receipt ("Protocolo"), signed by the applicant. To obtain the receipt, the applicant must:
a) click on this link and fill the visa-request form;
Notice: ALL fields must be filled out, not only those indicated with an asterisk. Incomplete forms will be returned;
b) Print and sign the receipt.
Notice: In case of visa application for minors under 18, the receipt must be signed by one parent or legal representative. For more information, read "Minors under 18 years of age", below;
3) One photograph
Passport size, in color or black and white, full-face only, on a white or clear background. Instant, digital, photocopies or scanned photos are not acceptable.
4) Non-criminal record
not less than 90 days old, issued by the Police Department of the applicant’s place of residence. The document must have an official signature as well as a stamped or raised seal of the Police Department. Printouts of computer-generated criminal records are not accepted.
5) The International Certificate of Vaccination may be needed.

II-Method of payment
The Consulate General in Chicago ONLY accepts payments with Money Order issued by the U.S. Postal Service payable to “Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago”.

Personal checks, credit cards, or any other form of payment are not accepted.
III-Processing time
Eight (8) working days if applied in person, or fourteen (14) days if submitted via mail.
Processing time may be extended on high season and in the case of group visas, without warning.
