Visit of Henrique Meirelles, former President of the Central Bank of Brazil, to Chicago

The former president of the Central Bank of Brazil, Mr. Henrique Meirelles, visited Chicago on November 4-5, 2010. During his trip, Mr. Meirelles
took part in four events organized by the Consulate General of Brazil: he spoke to executives and civic leaders at the Chicago Council on Global
Affairs, gave a lecture at the University of Chicago, and met with the leadership of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group (CME). Mr. Meirelles
also participated in a luncheon with executives of the most important Midwestern companies with subsidiaries in Brazil.

On November 4, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, in partnership with the Consulate’s Trade and Investment Department, organized a round
table with Mr. Meirelles and a select group of Chicagoan executives. Some of the city’s most important businesses were represented by approximately
35 executives,  primarily from the financial sector.

The University of Chicago invited Mr. Meirelles to its Hyde Park campus, where the official gave a lecture on the Brazilian economy at the Booth
School of Business. He presented the country’s economic prospects for the next few years to an audience of approximately 200 people, including
students and journalists. After the event, the University’s Center for Latin American Studies awarded Mr. Meirelles the title of “Distinguished Lecturer.”

On November 5, the CME Group hosted the former President of the Central Bank. During a visit to the organization’s Global Command Center,
one of the most sophisticated commodities trading platforms in the world, Mr. Meirelles received homage in recognition of his excellence conducting
the Brazilian monetary policy, and heading the country’s central bank.

In the afternoon, Mr. Meirelles joined a group of 40 business leaders in a luncheon organized by the CME Group and the Brazilian consulate.
The most important Midwestern companies with subsidiaries in Brazil were represented at the event.

Mr. Meirelles’ visit to Chicago confirmed the interest that the business sector has in Brazil. By ensuring Brazil’s economic and political stability,
Mr. Meirelles found an enthusiastic audience in the Midwestern business community. As a result, our Trade and Investment Department has been
consulted frequently by companies interested in the Brazilian market and eager to expand their operations to Brazil.

International Fuel and Ethanol Workshop and Expo
June 14th -16th, 2010

The International Fuel and Ethanol Workshop and Expo (FEW Expo) took place on the 14th to the 16th of June in St. Louis, Missouri. The Trade and Investment Department participated in the trade show by organizing a Brazilian booth and ethanol seminar.

Around 50 producers, manufacturers and researchers visited the booth each day to gather information and materials, watch a DVD on Petrobras’ biofuels program- which played continuously in the booth- and to express their business interests in Brazil. Many of these visitors had already traveled to Brazil on business yet continued to show interest in opening factories or in transferring technology to and from Brazil. Overall, visitors from Minnesota and Illinois had the strongest presence at the booth.

At the conclusion of the FEW Expo, the Trade and Investment Department organized a workshop on Brazilian ethanol. The workshop attracted a diverse group of investors and business people, most of whom had previously visited the booth, as well as two representatives from the Biofuels Department of the Brazilian Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES). The workshop was presented in four parts, the first being an overview, provided by Ambassador João Almino, on the history and policy of ethanol in Brazil and the importance of bi-lateral cooperation. During the second segment, a representative from the Trade and Investment Department outlined the ethanol industry and plants in Brazil. The third and fourth presentations were given by Mr. Fernando Spohr, Branding and Market Intelligence Coordinator of Apex-Miami, and Mr. Greg Gruning, Vice President of Sales of the Indy Racing League, explaining the Brazilian ethanol project at the Indy 500.
